Cyberattack on ‘Vilaayath Buddha’; Producer Files Complaint

Vilaayath Buddha: Producer Sandeep Senan has made a complaint in the Ernakulam North Police station against a possible coordinated cyberattack on the recently released film, Vilaayath Buddha. According to the complaint, a YouTube channel named, “”First Report Online”, disseminated political-religious falsehoods under the garb of reviewing the film, which targeted the film, cast, and creators.

Senan claims that the channel twisted the content of the movie and released videos intended to instigate communal discord and malign the project. He mentions this phenomenon as cyber-terrorism that polarizes the viewers against one another and tarnishes the reputations of films within hours of their release.

Allegations of Hate Campaign

The said video allegedly contains ad hominem attacks against the cast and crew and maintains that lead actor Prithviraj Sukumaran is the face of an “anti-Hindutva agenda.” In addition, it asserts that the film found no audience because of the actor’s recent political stands. Senan questions how these conclusions could be reached within just 48 hours of the theatrical release as he calls this review an effort in sabotage against the movie.

Vilaayath Buddha: Based on a Famous Novel

Vilaayath Buddha is one of the adaptations of the much-acclaimed novel by G.R. Indugopan, while the screenplay is written by Indugopan and Rajesh Pinnadan. Directed by Jayan Nambiar, the film is brought together by a sturdy cast including Shammi Thilakan, Rajashri, Priyamvada, Anu Mohan, and T.J. Arunachalam.

Senan mentions that he has spent almost ₹40 crore in five years to bring this project to life, and that such defamatory campaigns cost heavy losses and also instill dangerous communal narratives.

Police Action Initiated

Following the complaint, police have registered a case against the operators of the YouTube channel and initiated an investigation. Senan emphasizes the necessity for the film industry to take a very firm stand against damaging online attacks targeted at both creativity and harmony in society.
