How Did a 22-Year-old Kabaddi Player Die After a Puppy Bite?

Kabaddi Player: Gold medallist Brijesh Solanki, 22, of Farana village in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr district, had aspirations of playing in the Pro Kabaddi League. He got what seemed to be a minor nibble on his forearm when saving a stray puppy from a sewer in early May. He avoided the post-exposure vaccination because he thought the soreness was a typical sports strain. His limbs were numb just before his tragic departure, and a phobia of water surfaced. His condition deteriorated after being moved between district and private hospitals, but it ended when he was en route to a spiritual healer.

Coach Recalls the Incident:
According to media reports, Brijesh’s disregard for the bite’s possible danger converted what started as a compassionate gesture into a deadly one. In a detailed account of the occurrence, his coach Praveen Kumar said, “Brijesh thought the discomfort in his arm was just another kabaddi injury. He chose not to have the vaccination because the bite appeared to be minor and he did not believe it to be severe.

That one choice started a series of events that were impossible to stop. Brijesh’s family hurried from government hospital to government hospital as his condition worsened, but each time they encountered closed doors. Sandeep Kumar, his brother, told the publication about the experience.

He said, “He suddenly developed a fear of water and showed signs of rabies, but government hospitals in Khurja, Aligarh, and even Delhi refused to treat us.” Doctors at a private facility in Noida later identified the infection as rabies and provided only palliative care. After his death on June 28, health officials immediately took action. On July 1, teams visited Farana village, vaccinated 29 residents, and launched an awareness drive.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Sunil Kumar Dohre urged the public to seek immediate medical attention after any bite from a dog, monkey, or other animal. He stressed, “People must get examined at a government hospital without delay.” The ongoing campaign now aims to raise awareness and prevent similar tragedies.
