Why Players Wore Black Armbands in Yesterday’s Match?

Women’s World Cup 2025: In remembrance of Ben Austin, a 17-year-old Australian who passed away in Melbourne after being struck by the ball on the neck during practice, members of the Indian and Australian teams are wearing black armbands throughout their Women’s World Cup semifinal match. During training at Ferntree Gully, Austin was hit in the neck by a ball when he was practicing in the nets before a Twenty20 match, in front of his teammates. On Tuesday, paramedics with advanced life support and critical care transported him to the hospital in critical condition. He spent a day fighting for his life before dying on Wednesday.

As a sign of respect for the young athlete, the BCCI verified the homage before the game. On and off the field, it was an emotional evening as India defeated Australia to advance to the Women’s World Cup 2025 final.
