A Bengaluru man witnessed a sophisticated online scam. Premanand, a tech professional, purchased a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 for ₹1,87,000 on Amazon. He even recorded the unboxing process just for security. To his surprise in the video, he discovered the delivery contained a common and ordinary marble tile. The expensive foldable phone was missing entirely.
Premanand did not ignore a serious fraud. He first filed a report of the crime officially online. He made the filing through the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal. The techie later went to the local police station and reported the purchase formally to the Kumaraswamy Police. That began a record of the incident with the law.
Amazon India filed a report from the complaint, taking full responsibility for the problem. The company quickly returned, in full, the amount of Rs1,87,000. Amazon also indicated they would fully cooperate with police from the investigation. Officers are now examining delivery logs and tracking of the package. They are seeking to uncover where the original package got switched.
This dilemma underscores a deeply disturbing trend in online retail fraud, as fraudsters are presenting a new, advanced level of tactics. Previously, the tampered packages would be addressed with evidence of damage. Now, fraudsters will make similar and believable weights with the fake item. Premanand verified that the tile for the phone felt like a genuine phone. This slickness eliminates suspicion before the box gets opened.
And this is not an isolated case on the platform. Several customers indicate a week ago today, they received similar experiences with more high-end gadgets—again, likely scenarios to receive either fake or unintentional wrong items. But the platform generally works with customers impacted by these cases, especially after determining the legitimacy of a situation.
Many times, they start or finish investigating and will generally issue refunds to impacted customers. But these occurrences are blatantly seeing an alarming increase in advanced fraudulent scenarios. These repetitive incidents drastically erode at consumer trust and people become particularly anxious when ordering anything higher-end electronically.
