How Stay Invisible Online: Proven Steps to Protect Your Data from Hackers

Your private data is everywhere on the web: pictures, passwords and bank information etc. What hackers do is turn your public information against you. If a hacker cannot find it on the internet, they cannot steal it. Just follow these five secret and effective steps and they will make you seem almost invisible in the digital world.

1. Share As Little Data as Possible

The information we provide is often far more than we need to provide on those annoying forms we fill out online. We give them birthdays and parents’ names. Hackers can easily use that small information to find you. Whenever you are providing a piece of information in any form online, always stop to ask if it is absolutely necessary. If you determine it is not essential, leave that field blank or write N/A. You will also want to limit your social media profiles to the

absolute minimum as well. If your profile is public, at a minimum, ensure it is only viewable by friends.

2. Create Long Unique Passwords

First off, anything less than fifteen characters long is not considered a strong password. Stop using “123456” and other short passwords. Use a long and unique password for every account. Use upper- and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters to create your passwords. A password manager is going to help you tremendously. It not only stores all your passwords securely, but it can even generate strong passwords for you. Once again, always enable two-factor authentication (2FA). This is highly important because you are getting a second layer of security.

3. Encrypt Your Sensitive Files

The best way to protect your files and messages from unauthorized access is to encrypt them. Encrypting your files makes the data completely unreadable to anyone without the proper decryption key. Utilize cloud services that offer end-to-end encryption. Choose messaging apps that feature this capability. Use password-protected zip files on your computer. Consider using encryption software designed for extremely sensitive documents.

4. Routinely Declutter Your Digital Materials

Old accounts and unused apps create a security risk. Annually, declutter your email and cloud storage. Delete items such as pictures or documents that you do not need anymore. Before selling old devices, perform a factory reset. Make sure that you overwrite the storage, so that the old data cannot be retrieved. This completely removes your personal trace.

5. Always Be Cautious with Scams

Your laziness is a hackers greatest weapon. If you see a link in an email that looks suspicious don’t click on it. If it looks like a good attachment, do not download it. Remember, any legitimate bank will never ask for your password. If they do, verify with customer service. Always update your browser and your system updates. These have important security patches, to protect you from new threats.
