How to Convert Your SIM to eSIM on Airtel, Jio, Vi, and BSNL; easy step by step guide

Upgrade your physical SIM to a digital eSIM, and it is a easy and straightforward process that is covered in this tutorial. All of India’s major telecom operators now support eSIM technology and you can switch from home without trouble.

Check Your Phone Compatibility First

Before you begin, you need to check that your phone is compatible with eSIM technology. To do this you should check your phone’s settings. Go to Settings > Cellular if you are using an iPhone. Look for the option to change your physical SIM into an eSIM under the option that says, “Convert to eSIM”. If you are using an android device, the check your phone settings and look for the SIM manager option. Alternatively, check the manufacturer’s website.

General Requirements for all Users

You will need an active email address to use in this process, since the telecom operators will send a QR code to your email as part of the activation process. Continue your phone back on Wi-Fi. You will also need to locate your unique EID number on your phone. You will need this number to sign-up!

How to Switch Your Jio Phone Number to eSIM in MyJio

Open MyJio app on your phone and enter eSIM in the search bar with the three options. Under the “Switch to eSIM” option, enter the email you want to associate with the eSIM and check your email. Follow the confirmation prompts to let MyJio verify your email. Then, find your EID in your phone’s settings and copy/paste it into the MyJio app. Enter the OTP sent to you via SMS. Wait for the automated phone call from Jio. Follow the automated steps correctly.

Converting Vi to eSIM

Postpaid users should do the conversion using the Vi app. Go to “Help” >> “Raise a service request”. Select the option “Activate eSIM”. Simply enter your EID and verify it using an OTP sent to your number. For prepaid users this can be done via a text. Send your email id by sending a text to 199 as esime <your emailid>. Then respond ESIMY to the confirmation text from Vi. Follow the instructions sent to you via the IVR call.

Converting BSNL to eSIM

You need to go to a BSNL service centre for converting your BSNL sim to an eSIM. Conversion to an eSIM using the app or SMS is not an option. You will need your Aadhaar card for KYC. The staff member will assist in completing the process for you at the centre, that is currently the only way for BSNL.

Activate your eSIM profile

You will be emailed a QR code to activate your eSIM profile. On iPhone go to Settings >> Mobile Data >> tap on Add eSIM and scan the QR code. For Android go to Settings >> Connections, open the SIM manager and select add eSIM. This will let you scan your QR code as emailed. In both situations

your phone will automatically download the profile and you will receive a confirmation of it being completed.

Final important steps

Keep the physical SIM in your phone until your eSIM is fully working. You will need to keep your phone connected to Wi-Fi. Sometimes a network signal may take a few minutes so patience is required. Once activated your eSim should work perfectly. After your are happy that your eSim has activated and is working correctly you can now remove the physical SIM, it will no longer be needed.
