UPI digital payments have become an everyday preference in India. From roadside chai stalls to grocery outlets, people rely on apps like PhonePe, Paytm and Google Pay. Currently, every UPI payment requires you to authorise within the app by entering a 4- or 6- digit PIN. However, this may soon change and be even easier.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is reportedly moving ahead with the new facilities to approve payments through the use of biometrics. You may soon grant permission through either a fingerprint or face recognition scan instead of your PIN. In simple terms, approvals may be able to happen with the use of biometric identification such as Face ID or fingerprint unlocks, which could be a faster and easier option, particularly for older users or those who do not remember their PIN.
Biometric authentication is often quicker to authenticate, and more secure than entering a Pin. The fingerprint or face scans are uniquely yours and very difficult to clone. Additionally, it can help to reduce mistakes, especially for users with limited sight or poor memory. Biometric permission will provide a robust level of security and make completion of payments much easier.
Popular apps may be the first to release this feature. These include Google Pay, PhonePe, BHIM, and Paytm, which already officially support fingerprint and face ID as app login modes. Adding the same for freely confirming transactions just makes sense for an upgrade. However, there has been no official word yet from NPCI or the developers of said apps.
Biometric UPI will certainly help users (especially users who have a hard time remembering their PINs). It will be faster than entering the PIN, especially for small value purchases which you may make frequently. You can imagine this feature being very useful for older adults or people with disabilities (even just because of the speed). As biometric identifiers are generally harder to forge, this feature may also increase payment safety.

Though just in the development phases, biometric UPI payments may be released shortly. Once released, paying for your tea or groceries maybe only take a fingerprint or face scan, and nothing else! This update may just make India’s digital payment ecosystem even more seamless and user-friendly.
