Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 Is Hard To Repair, Gets iFixit Low Score

iFixit recently posted a teardown video of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7, and it found the phone to be extremely challenging to repair. In the video iFixit first removed the back panel of the phone, so they could see the phone’s internal components. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 contains two battery cells inside, and to access the first battery cell the team removed dozens of screws and ribbon cables, and they had to disassemble the USB-C port assembly.

Removing the Battery not easy

Samsung still uses pull tabs to remove the rechargeable batteries, but the adhesive is so strong, the battery is difficult to pull. In order to access the second battery cell, the team had to again apply heat to the cover display, before they used a suction cup to detach the outer panel. They also had to remove various other small parts, including a glued SIM tray. Once they had completed all these steps, they could access the second battery.

Screen is Fragile, and difficult to replace

The inner folding screen is fragile and tightly packed into the phones shell. The bezels are all glued and pose a significant risk of damaging the screen during repairs. The outer display is fragile as well and shows sensitivity to twisting or pressure. A screen that appears unharmed, might be damaged by the mere presence of dirt or light pressure for a pittance before being handled. In many cases, replacing the screen is not possible. Users typically need to perform a full

screen and chassis replacement.

Limited Availability of Spare Parts

Initially, there are no avenues for obtaining original parts for foldable phones. Samsung does not make replacement parts available for customers easily. Thus, self-repair or third-party repair is virtually impossible.

Final Repairability rating

iFixit gave the Galaxy Z Fold 7 a repairability score of 3/10 and called it a “repair nightmare.”
