Rashmika Mandanna’s The Girlfriend, fled with great anticipation but attracted several unwarranted comparisons to the cult movie Arjun Reddy. With the audience pointing fingers at the intense tone and emotionally heavy visuals, director Rahul Ravindran finally came out to respond to the comparisons surrounding his film. Talking to the media, the director stated that he had seen the comments linking The Girlfriend with Arjun Reddy but likened the comparisons to a moral overkill, in his opinion. For him, the only thing the teaser does is scratch the surface of what the real film goes after. He stressed that judging the narrative on the basis of a few dark moments is misleading and premature.
On X (Formerly Twitter) A fan asked Rahul, ”What was the thought behind giving @iamrashmika this particular look in the climax ? Why the colors on her face and clothes ? It was very powerful imagery but knowing you, is there a connection to Arjun Reddy or a diff movie ? ”
Rahul Ravindran reacted with a statement, ”No buddy… it had nothing to do with any other movie. Vikram uses these colours/paint to shame and humiliate her. She has learnt to embrace it now. She knows it’s a part of her now. That acceptance makes her stronger, invincible even. And for someone who starts out as an inexpressive introvert… she now doesn’t think twice about standing in front of the whole college in all her glory… with these colours on her. That’s what it was meant to signify. Hence the choice. A visual representation of “mari neeku leni siggu naakendhuku ra yedava!”

The director praised Rashmika Mandanna for what he considers to be one of her most layered performances. He suggested that her character will take the audience by surprise in terms of depth and intensity, which makes The Girlfriend really unique in terms of tone and treatment.
