RGV On iBomma Ravi: A filmmaker by the name of Ram Gopal Varma (RGV) who admits himself to outspoken, and most of the time, controversial opinions—has once again ignited furious debate on the internet by recently making comments regarding iBomma Ravi. As Ravi’s arrest has churned headlines with investigation proceedings and further debate into multiple issues, the bold comments given by RGV have set the new debate into motion and gone viral in no time.
RGV heavily condemned those who called iBomma Ravi a Robin Hood, calling the reasoning flawed and misleading. In his own words, “People supporting piracy are projecting Ravi as a hero. These people, quite obviously, are not concerned about the huge damage done to the creators and the industry.” He also made the point that romanticizing an illegal act solely because some consumers are getting free content is nothing but “mass ignorance” and has got nothing to do with social justice.
In a very fitting analogy made by RGV, these days, Robin Hood would be labeled more of a criminal than a savior. The philosopher emphasizes that glorifying someone who is sharing out goods that were stolen, whether it is digitally or not, would set a very dangerous moral precedent.
Filmmaker RGV also strongly criticized arguments held against high movie ticket prices, high popcorn prices, or OTT expensive subscriptions to justify piracy, likening this argument to justifying stealing luxury cars or jewelry since they are unaffordable. In RGV’s words, therefore, such logic is a cakewalk towards building a socially disorderly society where theft is branded public service.
RGV pointed out that people mostly view pirated content for convenience, accessibility, and because it’s free, and it is also very legitimate to state that some people in the film industry have also pirated due to ease, thus signifying that the larger issue is behavioral rather than ideological.

In conclusion, RGV suggested that the only thing which could kill piracy was making the viewer a criminal, along with the service provider. With catching pirates being hard due to names being masked behind digital anonymity, it is much easier to catch the viewers; he said that publicly naming and arresting someone would only serve to instill that sense of fear which, according to him, is the only deterrent, given that “Fear works, morality doesn’t.”
