Flight Cancellation in India: What Compensation and Refund You Can Claim

Flight Cancellation in India:

Flight delays and last-minute cancellations have become very common in India. Many passengers reach the airport on time but later find out that the flight is delayed for hours or completely cancelled. This causes a lot of stress, especially for people travelling for important work, medical needs, or family emergencies. To protect passengers, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has created clear rules. Every passenger should know these rights to avoid unnecessary trouble.

Flight Cancellation in India:

If a flight is delayed, the airline must inform passengers in advance through SMS or email. This helps travellers plan their time better and avoid waiting unnecessarily at the airport.

If the delay is more than 2 hours, the airline must provide free meals and refreshments. When the delay goes beyond 24 hours, passengers must be given free hotel accommodation along with transportation between the airport and the hotel.

If the flight gets cancelled or delayed for a very long time, passengers have the right to receive a full refund from the airline.

Passengers’ Rights

Passengers can choose a full refund or a free ticket on another flight to the same destination. If the airline loses or damages luggage, passengers can demand compensation.

If a seat is not given due to overbooking, the passenger can ask for both refund and compensation.

Passengers must receive clear information about the reason for delay or cancellation. If the ticket was booked 7 days earlier and the passenger cancels the trip 24 hours before travel, the airline must give a full refund.

If a flight is cancelled because of bad weather or technical issues, passengers will get a refund but not compensation. This is because such situations are beyond the airline’s control.

Why These Rules Matter

Many people do not know these rights and end up waiting for long hours or losing money. Understanding DGCA rules helps travellers make better decisions and ensures fair treatment during flight disruptions.
