IRCTC Travelers Alert:
Many people in India travel by train every day. It is one of the cheapest and most useful ways to travel long distances. But during train journeys, some passengers unknowingly make mistakes that can land them in serious trouble. One such major mistake is pulling the emergency chain without a real reason. Indian Railways has once again warned passengers to strictly avoid this.
The emergency chain is provided in every train coach only for real danger situations. This includes fire, medical emergencies, accidents, or when someone’s life is at risk. When the chain is pulled, the train stops immediately as the brakes are applied automatically. This safety system is meant only to save lives and prevent major accidents.
Nowadays, Indian Railways has also introduced a new emergency alarm device in many trains. This device is red in color and looks like a handle. It works the same way as the chain. When this handle is pulled or disturbed, the train stops automatically. However, many passengers mistakenly hang their bags, mobile phones, or other luggage on this handle. Because of this, the device gets locked and the train stops suddenly, even when there is no emergency.
Railway officials have clearly said that stopping a train without a proper reason is a serious crime under the railway law. According to Section 141 of the Railway Act, a person who misuses the emergency chain or alarm system can face a fine of up to ₹1000, or jail for up to one year, or even both punishments together.
Official reports show that such incidents are happening very often. Up to the month of October this year, 2,159 cases of unnecessary emergency chain and alarm misuse were recorded across different railway divisions. This not only wastes time but also causes trouble to hundreds of other passengers traveling in the same train.
Railway authorities are requesting all passengers to be careful during their journey. Luggage should never be placed carelessly near emergency devices. Even touching these devices accidentally can stop the train and cause delays.
Passenger safety is very important, but following the rules is equally necessary. A small mistake can lead to legal punishment and unnecessary stress. That is why everyone must stay alert, careful, and responsible while traveling by train.
