Every day, millions of passengers travel by train for work, education, business, and personal reasons. Some railway stations remain extremely crowded throughout the year because of high passenger flow, strong city connectivity, and economic importance.

Busiest Railway Stations in India:

The busiest railway station in India is Howrah Junction in Kolkata. It handles more than 61 million passengers every year. This station is known as the lifeline of the city and connects Kolkata to almost all major parts of the country. With 23 platforms, it is always filled with people.


Second on the list is Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai. Around 51.6 million passengers pass through this station every year. It serves both local and long-distance trains, making it one of the most important stations in India.

New Delhi Railway Station stands in third place with over 39 million passengers annually. Located in the heart of the capital, it is a key travel point for people coming from different states. The government is also working to upgrade it into a modern smart station.

Ahmedabad Junction is another busy station with more than 18 million passengers each year. It is a vital hub for Gujarat’s trade and travel activities. Heavy daily rush makes it one of the most crowded stations in western India.

Pune Junction serves over 22 million passengers and is popular among students, IT professionals, and office workers. It connects Pune with big cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, and Chennai.

Secunderabad Junction is Telangana’s major railway hub and sees around 27.7 million passengers every year. It acts as an important gateway to Hyderabad.

Chennai Central is the main entry point to South India and carries more than 30 million travelers annually. It connects the south to northern and eastern parts of the country.

Lokmanya Tilak Terminus in Mumbai was built to reduce pressure on other stations but now handles over 14 million passengers.

Hazrat Nizamuddin Station in Delhi also sees heavy traffic due to many long-distance trains passing through it.

Lastly, Anand Vihar Terminal serves the eastern corridor and supports travel towards Uttar Pradesh and Bihar with over 12 million passengers yearly.
