EPFO New Rule: Aadhaar Face ID Must for UAN? Full Details

EPFO New Rule: The Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has declared that the UMANG App’s Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology (FAT) will now be the exclusive method for the allocation and creation of Universal Account Numbers (UANs). This new regulation came into effect on August 1, 2025.

However, in certain rare circumstances, such as for foreign employees and citizens of Nepal and Bhutan, the current procedure of generating UAN through the employer will still apply. Earlier, a previous EPFO circular dated April 8, 2025, had introduced three EPFO facilities for employees/members via the UMANG app using Face Authentication Technology. This circular was referenced again in the latest update issued on July 30, 2025.

Three Major Services are:

1. Allotment of UAN and activation
2. Existing UANs need to have face authentication services.
3. Existing UANs also have to activate the UAN.

How to use these three services effortlessly?
1. To use this service, People who have subscribed for EPFO have to download the UMANG app and the Aadhaar Face RD App from the Play Store. For these services, employees can directly access them without consulting their employer.

2. The system completes the UAN activation process at the time of UAN generation by pre-populating the user’s information from the Aadhaar database. Users do not need to restart the UAN activation procedure. By using this service, they immediately access EPFO services like passbook viewing, KYC updates, and claim submission. This app serves as a one-stop solution for all EPFO needs.

What are the UAN-related services, and how can to access them?

1. Members need to have a valid Aadhaar card number.

2. Need to access the Aadhaar link mobile number for OTP verification.

3. Access Aadhaar face RD app for face authentication.

5. Enter the OTP which is generated earlier.

Face Authentication Step-by-Step Process:
1. Once the face authentication process is not completed, check your consent box.

2. Click on the face authentication for further processing.
