Hyderabad Metro: The High Court has taken a serious view on the promotions of betting apps in Hyderabad Metro trains. It has issued notices to the MD of HMRL in this matter. It has ordered him to file a counter affidavit with details related to the promotions of betting apps. Advocate Nagur Babu filed a PIL on this, and the court held a hearing and adjourned the further hearing to Monday.
The Metro Rail, which plays a key role in the public transport system of Hyderabad, is now embroiled in a controversy. The Telangana High Court has reacted strongly to the promotions of betting apps being carried out freely in Hyderabad Metro trains. In this matter, it has issued an urgent notice to the Managing Director of Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL), NVS Reddy. It has ordered him to immediately file a counter affidavit with detailed details related to the promotions of betting apps. With this, this issue has become a hot topic of discussion in the state.
Advocate Nagur Babu has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Telangana High Court, alleging that authorities are illegally promoting betting apps in metro trains. He questioned how officials could allow these advertisements, especially when nearly 5 lakh people commute daily on the metro. He raised concerns that such promotions could mislead the youth and encourage gambling habits.
In his petition, Nagur Babu accused Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) and its affiliated companies of violating the Telangana Gaming Act, 2017. He claimed they accepted huge bribes to permit advertisements for illegal betting apps. He requested the court to direct the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to conduct a detailed investigation and uncover how many officials and private individuals profited from the scam.
During a key hearing on April 24, the Telangana High Court judge listened to arguments from the petitioner’s lawyer. The court then issued notices to HMRL’s Managing Director, instructing the officials to submit a counter affidavit with full evidence and supporting details. The court postponed the next hearing to Monday, April 28, 2025.
Legal experts believe the case could reveal explosive details in the coming days. If the investigation proves that HMRL acted negligently or corruptly, the court may take strict action against those involved. All eyes are now on how seriously the High Court will pursue this matter.
