BSF Jawan: Indian authorities today took Border Security Force (BSF) personnel Purnam Kumar Shaw into custody at the Attari checkpoint after Pakistan Rangers arrested him last month for unintentionally crossing the international border.
BSF Response:
In a media statement, the BSF said, “Today, at around 10:30 AM, Pakistan Rangers handed over BSF jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw, who had remained in their custody since April 23, 2025, to Indian authorities at the Joint Check Post in Attari, Amritsar. Both sides conducted the handover peacefully and followed established protocols.”
On April 23, just a day after the horrific terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that claimed 26 innocent lives, a 40-year-old BSF member posted in Firozpur, Punjab, unintentionally crossed the border. The terror attack heightened tensions along the border.

The BSF guards the 3,323-kilometer India-Pakistan border, stretching from Gujarat to Jammu & Kashmir. BSF soldiers often cross the border unintentionally during patrols, and authorities usually resolve such incidents through a flag meeting. However, sources said Pakistan ignored repeated calls for a meeting to discuss Mr. Shaw’s release due to ongoing border tensions. A police officer told the media, “Pakistan is not responding because of the ongoing tension after the Pahalgam attack, but we have lodged our protest with the Pak Rangers and are making every effort to bring back the jawan.”
