Indian Students Scammed: Since Donald Trump took over as US President for the second time, many students from other countries, including Indians, who have gone to study in American universities have been spending sleepless nights. They are constantly haunted by the fear that they will be deported for any small mistake. Authorities are already issuing notices to many people to leave the US for any reason, from social media vetting to minor mistakes. This has made them and their parents extremely worried. It is a matter of great concern that Indian students are among those facing such situations. Taking advantage of this, some fraudsters are exploiting innocent students.
Recently, an Indian student named Shreya Bedi, who was studying in the US, was duped by fraudsters. The scammers targeted her for violating US immigration laws. They forced her to buy a gift card and immediately pay a bond of $5,000 (approximately Rs. 4.15 lakh in Indian currency) to avoid arrest and deportation.
Shreya Bedi, who moved to the US in 2022, is studying at Indiana University in the Bloomington area. On May 29, fraudsters approached her over the phone, claiming to be Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials. At that time, Shreya Bedi revealed that the officer also gave her details like her badge number and name and also advised her to check on the official website. After checking everything, Bedi confirmed that the call came from the number shown there. They also warned her not to call anyone for 3 hours as she was currently under surveillance.
Shreya Bedi revealed that at that time she was scared and bought gift cards as suggested by the fraudsters and shared their details. The next day, the police convinced her that they would send a bond for it. However, it was revealed that the fraudsters knew all the details about the woman in advance and targeted her. Currently, Shreya Bedi is trying to raise funds to live in America through Go Fund Me.
Shreya Bedi suggested that if such a situation arises, one should immediately contact lawyers. She revealed that government officials do not call directly. They only contact them through email. The officials do not ask for any gift cards, bank details, or social security numbers. She appealed to no one else to be deceived like she was deceived. She explained that foreign students are losing out due to lack of proper understanding of how the systems work in America.
