Operation Sindoor: Terrorists disguised in Uniform in Jammu

The Pahalgam massacre has let loose serious security worries in Jammu & Kashmir, where terrorists in uniform conducted a nightmare attack. The Terrorists disguised in uniform has made security operations even more difficult, with civilians as well as the forces themselves finding it hard to identify friend from foe.

The Pahalgam Horror:

On 22nd April, heavily armed TRF terrorists attacked tourists in Baisaran Valley and killed 26 individuals, including a naval officer and one Nepali citizen. The terrorists wore uniforms resembling Indian forces, and this created panic and confusion as a result of which the attacks were launched.

This is not the first time terrorists have attempted to use disguises in the form of lookalike uniforms. Three Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists wore military uniforms while conducting an operation in Tral sometime back. Security forces worry this act can result in deadly misidentifications during high-speed operations.

India’s Response: Operation Sindoor
Following the Pahalgam attack, Indian army launched Operation Sindoor against terror camps in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK). It was one of the most aggressive military operations after the 2019 Balakot air strikes.

High-Value Targets Affected
Indian army targeted a few of the high-value terrorists in Operation Sindoor, including Yusuf Azhar, Abdul Malik Rauf, and Mudasir Ahmed, who had been involved in previous terror attacks like the IC-814 hijacking and Pulwama explosion.

Security Measures and Future Implications
The agencies have already begun to review standard operating procedures in response to this threat. Security institutions are also studying tougher identification measures at checkpoints and tourist spots. The deployment of uniformed disguises is viewed as an open attempt to undermine civilian confidence in the security machinery.
Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam insurgency are examples of the emerging trends of terrorism in J&K. Even as India steps up its grip on its counter-terrorist campaign, fighting underground militants remains a top security problem.
