Why Did Lufthansa’s Hyderabad Flight Turn Back to Frankfurt?

Lufthansa’s Hyderabad Flight: A bomb threat, not a technical issue, forced a Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt to Hyderabad to return to base midair on June 15. Authorities initially kept the reason under wraps, but they have now confirmed the cause of the U-turn back to Germany.

Earlier reports stated that Air Traffic Control (ATC) at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport received an immediate notification after takeoff that Flight LH752 was turning back to Frankfurt. According to the flight tracking website FlightAware, the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner had been scheduled to arrive in Hyderabad at 6 a.m. IST today, but it departed Frankfurt around 2:15 p.m. local time.

Why did Lufthansa’s Hyderabad Flight take a U-turn?

Media reports state that a bomb threat on June 15 forced the Lufthansa flight to make a U-turn and return to Frankfurt Airport. An airline representative told the media, “We didn’t receive a landing permit for Hyderabad, so the aircraft turned around and returned.” Additionally, a Hyderabad airport official informed the media that authorities sent the flight back to Germany because the bomb threat came in while the aircraft was still outside Indian airspace.

Past Incident:

In a separate incident, a flap failure forced a British Airways flight from London to Chennai to return to Heathrow Airport. After detecting a technical issue, the airline described the return as a routine precaution.

The flight landed safely, and the crew and passengers disembarked without any problems. British Airways assured that they are doing everything possible to get the affected passengers back on their journey quickly. Officials clarified that neither of these incidents involved emergency landings. Since airlines and regulatory bodies prioritize safety, they often direct flights to return to their origin whenever a technical issue arises.
