Prepaid or Postpaid Sim? Now Switch Instantly with Ease

Prepaid or Postpaid Sim: Want to switch your mobile connection from SIM prepaid to postpaid or from postpaid to prepaid? If so, then there is good news for you. An important rule related to the SIM cards of crores of mobile subscribers in the country has now changed. The Department of Telecom (DOT) has simplified the process of switching between prepaid and postpaid mobile connections based on OTP. Now users can switch from prepaid to postpaid or postpaid to prepaid after 30 days.

Earlier, one had to wait for 90 days to do so. But as per the new directive issued on June 10, 2025, the Department of Telecom has reduced the mandatory cooling-off period for re-conversion. Earlier, after switching from prepaid to postpaid or vice versa, customers had to wait for 90 days to switch back. Now, this lock-in period of 90 days has been reduced to just 30 days. This move by the government will bring relief to millions of mobile users who are switching between prepaid and postpaid plans.

Another notable proposal

Meanwhile, there is another piece of news related to the Department of Telecom. The Department of Telecom has requested state governments to use BSNL services for data security. The Economic Times reported that the Department of Telecom has also asked state governments to use the telecom services of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) along with BSNL. Top sources related to the telecom sector say that the central government has instructed the government to use the services of telecom companies on a project basis. This is the first time that such a directive has been given in the country, according to national media reports.

This was stated in a letter written by DoT Secretary Neeraj Mittal to the Chief Secretaries of all states and union territories in April. The DoT Secretary explains in the letter that, in view of the decision taken earlier by the Union Cabinet, all state government departments, agencies and public sector undertakings are requested to consider using the services of BSNL and MTNL for their landline, broadband and leased line needs.
