WhatsApp will now show you summaries of unread messages. The company announced yesterday that it is adding a summary feature to WhatsApp powered by Meta AI. The new feature uses Meta AI to summarize unread messages in a chat.

This feature uses Meta AI to create short summaries of chats. This helps users quickly understand unread messages in individual and group chats without having to scroll through the text. The feature is currently available to WhatsApp users in the United States with support for English.

WhatsApp will expand this new feature to more regions and other languages ​​later this year. Private message summaries are part of Meta’s broader plan to integrate artificial intelligence more deeply into the WhatsApp experience through Meta AI. With this feature, users can ask Meta AI to summarize the content instead of opening each chat and reading a long backlog of messages.

Once requested, Meta AI will summarize users’ messages into bullet points and provide a quick overview of the relevant parts of the conversation. The feature will be available in both one-on-one and group chats. It will be especially useful during conversations where messages are piling up quickly.

How does it work?

The message summary feature works using private processing. This means that the AI ​​processes this data without transferring it to external servers or exposing it to company systems. Meta says this method is designed to ensure that neither Meta nor WhatsApp can see the actual content of the messages or the summaries that are created.

Meta also claims that the summaries are created in a way that protects privacy. Meta’s AI models do not retain or learn the summaries or the messages they process. This means that the data is not accessible to Meta or WhatsApp and remains invisible to everyone else in the chat. This means that only the user who requested the summary will be able to see it. And it will be an optional feature. Customers who want it will have to turn it on manually. In the advanced chat privacy controls, users can adjust their settings and specify which chats are included in AI-powered features like this.

Additionally, when a user asks Meta AI to summarize messages, these message summaries will not be communicated to other chat participants. Meta promises that WhatsApp summaries will remain a private activity, whether in a group or individual chat, and will not send a visible indicator or alert to others involved in the conversation.
