Google has announced a new feature for its Chrome web browser on iPhones and iPads that will provide users with a more seamless and secure way to manage personal and work-related browsing. Officially announced on July 21, 2025, the update gives users the ability to switch between a Google personal account and a managed (work) account—without the data overlap happening.
This update is immensely helpful for professionals who use the same device for both, personal and corporate-business purposes. Google Chrome keeps browsing history, saved passwords, open tabs, and in general all other locally stored content completely separate between both accounts. Meaning your personal searches aren’t in your work history, and sensitive company information won’t be intermixed with your personal activities.
This feature is designed for BYOD (bring-your-own-device) work environments. A BYOD workplace is an arrangement wherein employee’s use their personal devices to access corporate company’s resources. This update helps to not only anonymize user’s information but also aids improved management and security of data for companies.
It is worth mentioning that this switching capability will only be available using one personal Google account and one managed Google Workspace account (typically provided by your employer). As of this moment, Chrome does not support switching between two separate Google accounts.
To improve usability while reducing some confusion, Chrome will give visible on-screen notifications when people sign in to or switch between Google accounts. Using the latest version of Chrome means you are always made aware of which profile is ‘active’, and which data is being stored or synced.
In addition to the improvements for individual users, Google has also developed some improved tools for business users. IT administrators of organizations can now get access to more detailed reports about Chrome usage and activity on iOS devices. IT administrators can also use URL filtering to control web activity in managed accounts preventing access to unacceptable websites and ensuring compliance with organizational policy.
How to Use the New Chrome Account Switching Feature on iPhone/iPad:
– Update Chrome: Make sure you’re running the latest version of Chrome from the App Store.
– Open Chrome & Tap Profile Icon: Simply tap your profile picture at the top right corner of the app.
– Sign In to Both Accounts: First, add your personal Google account, and then your company-managed Google account (also called ‘managed account’).
– Switch with Ease: Click the profile icon anytime to switch back and forth between accounts.
– Data Separation: Chrome will keep all passwords, history, and tabs that are unique to each Google account totally separate.
– Pop-up Alerts: When switching to your managed account for work, the browser will fields a pop-up message that lets you know you entered into a managed environment.
