Google Pixel 6A Catches Fire After Update: Raises Concern For Users

Google Pixel 6A Catches Fire After Update: Raises Concern For Users

A Google Pixel 6A user posted a horrifying incident that happened with the phone when they did a battery performance update. The incident came on top of many earlier reports of overheating and fire associated with Pixel A-series devices.

The user posted on Reddit that they woke up to a “terrible smell and loud noise.” He discovered that his Pixel 6A was burning while plugged into the charger overnight on his nightstand.

Charger and Damage Details

At the time, the phone was connected to a 45W Steam Deck charger. The fire melted the case and display. The user said, “Sheets caught fire, the AC unit’s surface melted, and my throat hurt all day from smoke inhalation.”

Latest Update Problematic on Pixel 6A

There are reports connecting this incident to the recent battery performance update from Google. The update was intended to slow charging speed once the battery has been cycled 400 times to reduce overheating but problems are still happening for some Pixel 6A.

Google previously offered battery replacements for free for the perfect devices on the program. However, the user from Reddit could not find a possible battery replacement near him.  He installed the software update but did not replace the battery.

Google’s Response

As of writing, Google has not commented about this incident with the Pixel 6A. The silence alarms current owners who are worried about outstanding battery safety issues.

Safety Guidance for all Pixel 6A users:

Experts recommend:

  1. Do not charge phones overnight.
  2. Keep the device away from anything flammable while charging.
  3. Use an official or certified charger only.
  4. Check if you qualify for Google’s free battery replacement program.
