India Post’s digital addressing system is expanding, DIGIPIN, across more states. The system aims to modernise India’s postal and logistics network. It first launched in 2023. DIGIPIN assigns a unique 10-character alphanumeric code to every 4×4 metre space in the country. The code helps identify exact locations with GPS-level accuracy.
Officials say the system is now active in over 60 districts and is being gradually introduced in urban and rural regions alike. The Department of Posts confirmed that the platform continues to operate via https://dac.indiapost.gov.in/mydigipin/home.
DIGIPIN does not replace your postal address or PIN code. Instead, it complements it. Unlike traditional postal PINs that refer to broad zones, DIGIPIN is based on latitude and longitude, offering accuracy up to 4 metres.
Developed with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO’s National Remote Sensing Centre, DIGIPIN supports offline use and has open-source logic for integration with logistics, emergency response, and location services.
Officials say DIGIPIN is especially useful in areas lacking formal addresses, such as tribal belts, farmlands, and disaster-prone regions. It helps delivery agents, ambulance drivers, and public agencies reach exact spots without relying on local landmarks or informal directions.
In regions like parts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and the Northeast, where terrain and scattered homes make navigation hard DIGIPIN has shown promising early results.

India Post is working with e-commerce platforms to integrate DIGIPIN for faster, error-free deliveries. The system is also expected to support disaster response, land surveys, census work, and rural outreach in the coming years.
While adoption is still growing, the postal department expects DIGIPIN to become a standard digital layer for location referencing by 2026.
