OpenAI has officially launched GPT-5, its most advanced AI model yet. CEO Sam Altman called it the company’s “best” for coding, reasoning, and autonomous task execution. The model comes in three versions: GPT-5, GPT-5-mini, and GPT-5-nano. These offer developers choices based on speed, performance, and cost. GPT-5 is rolling out to all ChatGPT users, including Free, Plus, Pro, and Team tiers. Enterprise and Edu users will get access within the next week.
Altman said GPT-5 offers sharper intelligence, faster responses, and deeper practical reasoning. It can adapt responses depending on the context, choosing between a rapid answer or a thoughtful, in-depth reply. The model excels in key areas like coding, mathematics, healthcare, writing, and visual interpretation.
At the GPT-5 launch, Altman highlighted India’s critical role in OpenAI’s global expansion. He revealed that India is now OpenAI’s second-largest market, trailing only the United States, and said it “may well become the largest.” Altman expressed admiration for how Indians are applying AI in creative, impactful ways and said the company is committed to improving accessibility and affordability in the region.
He added that OpenAI is actively working with local partners to build products tailored for Indian users. The CEO also announced his upcoming visit to India in September, signaling increased focus on the country’s rapidly expanding AI ecosystem.

Calling GPT-5 a “new chapter,” Altman praised its ability to deliver insights equivalent to PhD-level knowledge. The model’s agentic capabilities allow it to perform complex tasks with minimal input, making it a powerful tool for businesses, developers, and researchers alike. By making GPT-5 available even to free-tier users, OpenAI is signaling a commitment to broader AI access, just as global demand, especially from India, surges to new heights.
