Microsoft Faces Legal Action Over Windows 10 Support End

Microsoft will end support for Windows 10 in October 14, 2025. Not everyone is happy about that fact. A man from California has filed a lawsuit, alleging that this effectively forces people to have to buy new computers, and that this is part of Microsoft’s larger plan to dominate the artificial intelligence industry .

Windows 10 Support Stops in 2025

Microsoft has stated that it will stop supporting the Windows 10 operating system in October 2025. This means that users of Windows 10 will no longer receive security updates, bug fixes, or any help or assistance once that time has passed.

Microsoft has recommended that all users upgrade to Windows 11 or enter its “Extended Security Updates (ESU)”, or ESU program. Users of Windows 10 who have older devices that are unable to run Windows 11, must either upgrade or stop using the device altogether, use the ESU program, or buy a new computer altogether.

Basis For the Lawsuit

Lawrence Klein, who lives in Southern California, claims he has two laptops that both run Windows 10. Neither of the laptops meet the system requirements for Windows 11.

Klein claims that his laptops, while functioning perfectly, will be unsafe and nearly useless without support, despite still functioning perfectly. Solomon claims that Microsoft is trying to force users to buy new devices, and, in Klein’s view, that Microsoft is using this to dominate the market in AI. The lawsuit was filed under case ID 25CU041477C.

What is this lawsuit about AI monopoly?

This lawsuit accuses Microsoft of creating and controlling the Generative AI market. Windows 11 has Copilot that uses AI, and it works best on devices equipped with NPUs, which are only on new computers. Older computers like Klein’s do not have NPUs and therefore cannot run Windows 11 and benefit from the AI tools it provides.

The lawsuit alleges that Microsoft is forcing the installed user base to buy hardware to take advantage of the AI expansion with Windows 10 discontinued.

What does the lawsuit want?

Klein seeks a court order forcing Microsoft to continue to provide free support for Windows 10 until the user base drops significantly. He also seeks Microsoft to pay for legal fees related to the lawsuit.

What is Microsoft telling users?

Microsoft is encouraging users to upgrade to Windows 11 if their device qualifies. If not, the user can pay for the Extended Security Updates plan or buy a new computer. Microsoft has not made a public statement concerning Klein’s lawsuit.
