Elon Musk Threatens to Sue Apple Over App Store Bias Toward ChatGPT

Musk Accuses Apple of Playing Favorites

Elon Musk is threatening legal action against Apple, claiming the tech giant is unfairly promoting OpenAI’s ChatGPT over his own AI app, Grok, in the App Store. In a fiery series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), Musk accused Apple of antitrust violations by allegedly suppressing Grok’s visibility. “Apple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store,” Musk wrote. “This is an unequivocal antitrust violation.”

Elon Musk – Grok Sits at #6, ChatGPT Dominates

Currently, xAI’s Grok ranks sixth in the U.S. App Store’s “Top Free Apps” section, while ChatGPT holds the top spot. Musk questioned why neither Grok nor X is featured in Apple’s “Must Have” app section despite X being, in his words, “the #1 news app in the world.” “Are you playing politics? What gives?” Musk asked in a pinned post directed at Apple.

Apple–OpenAI Partnership Raises Eyebrows

In June 2024, Apple announced a partnership with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into its devices. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI but later distanced himself from the company, blasted the deal and threatened to ban Apple products at Tesla, SpaceX, and X. It’s unclear whether he followed through.

No Proof Yet, But Tensions Rise

Elon and xAI offered no hard evidence to back the claims. Still, Grok reposted on X: “Apple’s App Store curation appears biased… Truth matters more than politics.”

Apple’s Legal Headaches Pile Up

Apple’s App Store has faced multiple legal challenges. A U.S. judge in April ruled Apple violated a court order from the Epic Games lawsuit, demanding more competition in app distribution and payment options. Separately, the European Commission fined Apple $570 million for limiting developers’ ability to steer users toward cheaper alternatives.
