Apple is preparing a low-cost MacBook for students and other everyday users. You can expect production to start by the end of 2025.
The new MacBook will be sold at a price of $699 for regular buyers and only $599 for students. A lot cheaper than the MacBook Air at $999 and at the moment $899 for education buyers for the MacBook Air.
This new MacBook will be powered by Apple’s A18 Pro chip. This is the same chip used in the iPhone 16 Pro. Apple will have the MacBook in pink, blue, and yellow colors. It will have a 12.9-inch screen which is actually smaller than the MacBook Air’s 13.6-inch display. The screen may have lower resolution and brightness than the MacBook Air. Apple may use lower-cost display technology to keep costs down.
The laptop should be lighter than the M4 MacBook Air as the M4 MacBook Air weighs about 2.7 pounds. Analysts predict this new model will be lighter than 2.5 pounds. Apple hasn’t made any announcements regarding if this is going to be part of the Air lineup, it may just be a MacBook.
The base version could get as little as 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. Most users would want Apple to provide a base version with 256GB storage. The A18 Pro chip will not parallel M-series chips in power. However, it will allow Apple Intelligence and its AI-based features to enable smart tools and apps to perform flawlessly.
This low-cost MacBook should appeal to students and cost-sensitive users. It does offer a more traditional laptop experience than an iPad for certain users. Apple might even be competing against itself with this new MacBook, especially among the iPad lineup.
For example an iPad that features an A16 chip has a list price of Rs. 36,900 for students. The new MacBook might enable a new pricing strategy by Apple in the low-end segment. Also, it provides Apple with an added capability to grow its market in the laptop segment.
Apple should begin mass production by late 2025 and begin shipping in early 2026. Final specifications will likely come at a time closer to the launch.
