Elon Musk’s xAI announced that Grok 4, their newest AI model, is free for everyone. At first, Grok 4 was exclusively available to SuperGrok and X Premium subscribers. This development is coming shortly after OpenAI released their newest model, GPT-5, and made it free for all users. The announcement was posted by xAI on their social media site X.
They wrote, “Grok 4 is free for all users worldwide now. Use auto mode, and Grok will automatically route a tough query to Grok 4. If you want to have control, you can select “expert” mode.” xAI has been quite generous with usage limitations for a period of time, allowing users to fully exploit Grok 4’s capabilities.
Grok 4 has two modes: auto mode and expert mode. In auto mode, Grok will decide if the query requires some reasoning. In auto mode, Grok is faster and saves computing resources. In expert mode, users can switch to Grok 4, finding the details from Grok 4 will be more in depth. Expert mode is especially useful if Grok’s initial answer isn’t satisfying.
Grok 4 can stream smarter, more detailed answers than earlier models. However, Grok 4 Heavy, the latest advanced model by xAI, is only available to SuperGrok Heavy customers. This is a good balance for xAI to get more consumers, and obviously offer some limitations on subscribers’ premium options.
