Vivo has unveiled its first mixed reality (MR) headset, called the Vision Explorer Edition, in China. It is aimed at competing with Apple’s Vision Pro. The headset is equipped with advanced technology including two 8K Micro-OLED displays and a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip. It runs on Vivo’s custom operating system called OriginOS Vision.
The Vision Explorer Edition has two 8K Micro-OLED displays, each with a resolution of 3,552 by 3,840 pixels. They cover 94% of the P3 color space and provide rich and vivid colors. The device supports vision correction from plus or minus 100 to 1000. With this high-res display and color accuracy, images are quite clear and immersive.
The headset has a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip, ensuring smooth performance and fast processing. Vivo created a custom power management system called Blue Ocean for peak battery life and efficiency. It offers an ultra-low latency of just 13 milliseconds, limiting lag in the user experience.
The Vision Explorer Edition weighs just 398 grams, is 83mm tall, and is 40mm deep. It is light enough to wear for periods of time. The large front visor adds better field of view. The padded rear headband secures the headset comfortably to the user.
The headset features eye tracking to within a 1.5-degree measurement accuracy. It also can detect micro gestures within a 26-degree range of depth of field and a 175-degree range of interaction space in the vertical dimension. Gestures can be used to control the device without any additional controllers.
The field of view is a full 180 degrees, which works with spatial audio to create a highly immersive experience. Virtual cinema screens can be created at 120-inches, with controls and app interaction performed using hand gestures.
The Vision Explorer Edition features 3D video recording capability as well as spatial photo curation. Some of the advanced features, however, only work when a select, Vivo mobile device is paired. Multi-device casting, immersive dome video experiences, thrice-sport viewing and gaming from either a PC or mobile devices are possible. It is also possible to use multi-window productivity for work tasks.
Preorder from 12 Vivo authorized experience stores in China is currently possible. Vivo will be opening even more experience stores in the near future. The Vision Explorer Edition will compete with Apple’s Vision Pro, Meta Quest 3 and a (March) upcoming XR headset developed by Samsung.
