Andy Evans, a 57-year-old from Somerset, lost his sight last year. He had to leave his job working nights at Morrisons supermarket. The doctors labelled him blind soon after. He struggled with everyday tasks and thought he had no future.
That all changed when Andy started to use Meta’s AI powered Ray-Ban smart glasses. The glasses had a camera and small speakers.
They aided the user by explaining what is in front of them. They called out objects, read menus and recognised the surroundings while Andy wore them.
When Andy personalised the glasses, he had the option of accent and voice. So, he decided on something fun and familiar. It was the voice of British actress Dame Judi Dench. She calls him “James Bond” or “007” in a playfully manner. Words cannot describe how reassuring and enjoyable this experience, gave him confidence.
With the aid of the smart glasses. Andy returned to work. He now worked at Sight Support West of England. His role was to help people who had lost their sight. When they returned to him, he helped them with their training about living independently again.
According to Andy, the glasses have completely changed his life. He feels confident, able to contribute, and useful again in society. Andy has the ability to read signs, menus, and recognize objects with little effort. He now confidently negotiates getting around in public spaces.
Robin Spinks from the RNIB stated that AI is making a genuine difference. It is his belief that technology like this helps people to continue to be active and independent. It helps them engage confidently in daily life. So much so many visually impaired people are using AI devices to assist them in their lives.
These AI smart glasses are made by Meta and Ray-Ban and are available for consumers in many markets. Pricing and availability may vary by country and region. They are also available in India in some locations.
