Mixed Reality is the upcoming trend in technology. Recently Apple and Vivo have announced the launch of two premium headsets both of which have innovative features in both hardware and software.
The Apple Vision Pro is now available in the US starting at $3,499 (approx ₹2.9 lakh). Currently, Vivo has not yet disclosed the price of the Vision Discovery Edition headset. However, industry reports say the estimated price will be CNY 10,000 (approx ₹1.21 lakh). This gives Vivo’s headset about half the cost of Apple’s. Both devices are not yet available for purchase in India officially.
The Apple Vision Pro headset utilizes dual Micro-OLED displays, with 23 million total pixels. This provides great clarity and brightness while important utilizing foveated rendering.
It is powered by an M1 series chip, along with a new R1 chip. Both chips process data received from 12 cameras, 6 microphones, and 5 sensors. LiDAR and TrueDepth cameras do the hand tracking and complete environmental mapping.
Apple has advertised ultra-low latency of 12ms. Some notable features of the Apple Vision Pro are Spatial Audio, and Optic ID iris-based security. There are Zeiss lens options for users of glasses and many apps available for use including, Microsoft, Zoom, Disney, etc.
Apple also has the option of a “Persona” that produces a 3D version of a user’s face.
The first MR headset from Vivo looks like Apple’s MR headset. It has a glass visor, detachable seals, and an external battery connected by a braided cable. This device weighs in at just 398 grams (a featherweight in MR). It has dual 8K Micro-OLED displays, and good color space, and differentiation.
The headset has a Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip and includes Vivo’s Blue Ocean power management system to improve efficiency. It has an impressive latency of 13 milliseconds—similar to Apple’s MX171.
It’s advanced features include 1.5-degree eye tracking and 26 degrees of depth with gesture control, as well as 180-degree field of view and a 120-inch virtual cinema screen; the Vivo Vision also captures 3D video and displays smart devices like phones and PCs—although some tools exclusively work with Vivo’s phones. It runs on OriginOS Vision, which supports multitasking, videos, gaming, and app casting.
