WhatsApp Beta: The Meta-owned messaging service is developing a feature that would enable users to send status updates with their close contacts, as evidenced by the release of the most recent WhatsApp Beta for the iOS 25.23.10.80 upgrade and its accessibility via the TestFlight app. A feature that would allow users to select a more individualized audience for their status updates is something WhatsApp is looking into implementing.
Close Friends Feature:
This planned feature aims to let users create a “close friends” list on the privacy settings screen. After completing the list, users can decide while publishing whether to share a new status with their default audience or only with their chosen close friends. WhatsApp will mark these updates with a different color, similar to Instagram’s feature, so viewers can clearly see that the status was shared only with close friends. The platform intends to keep the close friends list private.
Special Feature Details:
WhatsApp does not notify users when someone adds or removes them from the close friends list, nor does it alert them about any resulting status updates. People on the list at the time of posting can access the prior status, but newly added contacts do not see it if the user updates the list afterward. To apply the new settings for a previously shared status, the user must manually delete the update and post it again. This rule ensures clarity and prevents unintended changes in visibility after posting, although it requires a bit more effort.

iOS Update on WhatsApp:
WhatsApp’s Beta platform added a new feature in the recent iOS 25.22.83 update and plans to roll it out worldwide. The update introduces a dedicated “My Status” option in the iOS share sheet, letting users publish images and videos as status updates directly from any app. WhatsApp officials said the new shortcut speeds up the process by removing the need to open WhatsApp before browsing the contact list. They also explained that the update lets users instantly edit their status with text, graphics, or emojis before publishing, making sharing faster and easier. In addition, WhatsApp is exploring more options for posting status updates, aiming to give users greater control over who they communicate with.
