YouTube is plans to revise its Premium Family plan terms. Only people living in the same house can share it. If you violate the terms, you will lose access. This is a copycat of Netflix’s crackdown. Here’s everything you need to know about the change.
YouTube indicates that they have flagged accounts that are not sharing the same address with a prompt to the associated technology. Users receiving a notice and warning email stating, “Membership will be paused soon.” You will be notified and the accounts will lose access to premium features after 14 days.
You will still be part of the family group account, though all ad-free features, including videos and music will not continue past 14 days after receiving the original email. In India, the Premium Family plan costs consumers ₹299 a month, and allow for five users.
All users must live in an approved residence. Every 30 days, YouTube will check that all users have the correct address and that it is recognizably the same address for each, etc. Previously, users have diverted from this restriction in the context of most other apps, like Netflix’s restrictions on address verifications.
This is stricter than how it was before. All boundaries take a toll and no access to the accounts if it does not meet compliance. YouTube has an obligation to stop unauthorized sharing. Stopping unauthorized sharing keeps the benefits afforded from collective sharing at a more fair level.
YouTube is looking for growth in subscribers. People that account for the massive backlash Netflix’s clients had did find value in Netflix with the similar move. YouTube is expecting the same opportunity for gain now. The application is a terrific value for users, ad free videos, ad free music. For the Indian pricing, it has the potential you sell it back to anybody.
Noting that this will upset some users and will limit access to friends or family who don’t live in the same household. This could lead to some needing plans per user, where individual plans run ₹149 a month. Which for most is still manageable!
Users must choose between compliance and separate payments. The restriction will be in effect soon.
YouTube essentially offers both of these services under one plan. You receive ad-free YouTube and Music. This makes it a very attractive plan. However, tighter restrictions may limit sharing and increase paid subscriptions. YouTube will benefit from the demand for more content in India and is banking on more subscriptions.
Verify the address on your account. What you see has to match what the plan is managed under. If you have any issues contact YouTube Support. If you have trouble, please share your experience on reddit/YouTube. Check YouTube channels for updates. Consider an individual plan for yourself if you will be ineligible for compliance. Do so before exercise the 14 day pause.
Following the rules means you can continue your access or usage. Good and ad-free watch! Enjoy access to music downloads. You still have access and the plan is still a great price. If you divide ₹299 by five people to share it is effectively very cheap. Compliance means you can avoid any additional costs.
YouTube’s change may well cause a backlash. Again, low prices soften landing. It is plausible that more users will migrate to individual subscriptions. YouTube will always be a valuable source of content and users become loyal to platforms that are valuable. Expect stricter controls in the future.
