Mizoram’s First Railway Line: Bairabi–Sairang Project Explained

Mizoram’s First Railway Line: PM Modi has recently inaugurated Mizoram’s First railway line. This project line is from Bairabi to Sairang. Constructed at an expense of Rs 8,070 crore, the 51.38-kilometer line is considered to be among the most intricate projects in Indian Railways’ history.

Bairabi–Sairang Project Explained:
This project was first sanctioned from 2008 to 2009, and the construction started in 2015. In the project, 45 tunnels, 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges, and 10 underpasses are developed. The alignment goes across bridges and tunnels for around 54% of its length. One of its most remarkable constructions is Bridge No. 144 in Sairang, which, according to the Northeast Frontier Railway, is the tallest pier railway bridge in the nation at 114 meters, higher than Delhi’s Qutub Minar. To connect the communities along the route, the project additionally added four stations: Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang.

What is Special in Bairabi–Sairang Project?
For the first time, the state capital is directly connected to India’s railway network thanks to the new route, which connects Bairabi on the Assam–Mizoram border to Sairang, which is only 20 km from Aizawl. After Guwahati, Agartala, and Itanagar, Aizawl is now the fourth capital in the northeast to have direct train access.

When does Bairabi–Sairang Railway Line start?

The train departs Sairang every Friday evening and returns from Delhi on Sunday evening. Starting September 13, the Guwahati Express will operate daily, leaving Guwahati at 7 p.m. and Sairang at 7 p.m. The Kolkata Express will run three times a week, departing Sairang on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and arriving in Kolkata on Saturdays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.
