At the recent Snapdragon Summit, Qualcomm introduced two new chips. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. These two advanced chips will power premium Android devices. These chips will be available in products launching in late 2025 and later. The chips are designed to promise improved performance, gaming graphics, and AI capabilities.
Qualcomm describes the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 as the most powerful chipset for mobile devices. According to the company, it has the fastest central processing unit (CPU) for any flagship device.
The graphics processing unit (GPU) produces smoother gaming with bright graphics, as well as functionality with the neural processing unit (NPU) that puts AI tasks into action, including taking photos and editing them in real-time, outputting voice commands, and executing voice recognition.
Qualcomm states the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 has no shortage of performance capabilities and provides all-day battery life, and is intended for the ultra-premium segment producing for power users.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chips are a level below the Elite version yet still provide processing for many flagship devices. The architecture is the same and peak performance is just lower than the Elite.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 will power the upper mid-range to premium phones for the broader market while allowing the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 to balance speed, performance, efficiency, and accessibility.
Qualcomm made the feat of simplifying their nomenclature in 2021 because the older Snapdragon 888 title caused confusion with buyers. To put it simply, the naming system is once again logical.
For instance, the production number “8” represents the flagship chips, 7 and 6 levels signify the mid-range devices, and the number “gen” was included in the name to reference their generation ie. Gen 3 or Gen 5. The “Elite” designation refers to the higher-end variant.
Elite Gen 5 is geared towards flagship devices. It shines in gaming, AI, and photography. The normal Gen 5 processor is destined for flagship smartphones. It can produce better results than lower-cost devices, although not to the same extent as the Elite. Both chips utilize advanced technology. But, if you want the very best, the Elite is just that.
These two chips will affect the pricing structure of smartphones, and what features those smartphones will carry. Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 smartphones will cater to high-end games and app users, and will typically be more expensive because of the high-end performance the Elite affords.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 smartphones, on the other hand, will provide flagship speeds, but be more affordable for average entries into the flagship space. Both options will allow you to use multiple apps quickly and take very good or excellent photographs.
Smartphone brands are expected to announce new devices utilizing one of these chips imminently, with announcements taking place late 2025, early 2026.
Expect tier one brands like Samsung and Xiaomi to use either the Elite or Gen 5 processors for future flagship smartphones. These chips are expected to power the next generation of top end Android smartphones.
