Hyderabad’s tech startup Equal launched EqualAI on October 2, 2025. It is India’s first wake-word AI call assistant. Initially, users in Delhi-NCR can download it on Android for free from the Google Play Store.
Equal expands to Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad shortly after. An iOS version quickly follows the Android launch. The core service remains free, but users can access more significant features through paid subscriptions.
According to Keshav Reddy, founder and CEO of Equal, it has lofty ambitions to attract 10 lakh daily active users by March 2026. EqualAI’s objective is to handle all of a user’s unknown calls, either for scam, spam, delivery, or telemarketing.
Often, the general public ignores unknown numbers. Some people respond only to find out their getting contact to try and sell them on something. While current apps generally only show you what the name of the contact is.
They do not provide further information and often users wait for the end of the phone call so that they can follow up later to find out more information about the unknown caller. EqualAI seeks to address this behavior.
EqualAI activates upon receiving a phone call. It answers on the user’s behalf and sends the user a notification of the live call. EqualAI triggers an interactive interface that takes over the user’s phone screen.
The AI interacts via chat with the contact. The user is able to send messages to the call the AI has, in the event they want to participate in that phone call.
Users retain full control every step of the way. If the user opts not to participate in the call, the EqualAI will obtain as much information as possible, summarize it, or record the call and provide sufficient information for equitable decision-making later.
EqualAI does more than just listen. When a user clicks “leave at the gate”, the AI takes over by letting the caller know through voice interface. It manages live conversations in a smart manner. The user can text the AI rather than engage with someone on the phone.
