Your Old Snapchat Memories Will Now Cost You Money

Your Old Snapchat Memories Will Now Cost You Money

Snapchat is altering its well-known Memories function. The app will stop supplying unlimited free storage for all users. This shifts a practice that has been in place for the last ten years. Users now have to pay to save their Memories of past photos and videos. It is possible to store some content for free, but again, some limits will apply to storage.

New Storage Pantry and Plans

The company has also released new Memory Storage plans. Every user will receive 5GB of free storage. The free tier is replacing the unlimited plan. To store more than 5GB of content, you will need to subscribe to a paid storage plan, just like other, similar services (e.g., iCloud, Google Drive).

Subscription Pricing

Snapchat released three subscriptions for users in different tiers. The first plan includes 100GB, and is priced at $1.99 a month (approximately ₹165). The 256GB plan will cost around $3.99 (around ₹330) per month. A slight variation is a 5TB plan for those more frequent users. These plans are starting to roll out across the world as we speak.

Important Dates and Warnings

Snapchat will start storing all new Memories, although just as temporary storage. The app will offer users twelve months of free temporary storage. After one year, Snapchat will delete this content. Again, you will need to download these Memories to your personal device or you will need to buy one of the storage plans.

What Actions Should Users Take Next?

Snapchat has suggested that users should download their Memories. Preview the image or video and download to your phone. From there, you can transfer them to another cloud service. This will help to ensure your data is not deleted. The company has admitted that this is a difficult change for the company’s community.

User Response and Company Response

The decision has angered many long-time users who have years of memories stored in the app. The company said the change is not easy. They are hopeful that users would find value in the paid Memories feature, which has created a challenging position for users either they will have to pay or they risk losing their data.
