Symptoms of Cough Medicine Reaction in Children: Here’s How to Respond

Are Cough Syrups Safe? Cough Syrups are very common household medicines now. Most people use cough syrup for a dry and itchy throat. But over a period of time, cough syrups can be harmful to children. According to the top health organizations, it is advised to reduce the use of cough syrup. There are a number of side effects after using cough syrup. Side effects like dizziness, drowsiness, agitation, nausea, vomiting, and headaches are very common after consuming it.

If there are severe reactions after consuming the cough syrup, it is advised to consult a doctor immediately. Very common signs are breathing difficulties, irregular heartbeat or very fast heartbeat, hallucinations, seizures, blurred vision, lack of coordination, or blue lips and fingernails. If you or your loved ones are facing any of these symptoms, consult a doctor immediately for medication.

As per the medical reports and recommendations from experts, cough syrup should be avoided for children under five. Cough syrups that contain decongestants or antihistamines are dangerous for those under two. As cough is a very natural way of clearing your airways, this is very normal from childhood. Even though cough syrup gives you relief for that moment, this is going to be a very harmful medicine over the period of time.

Safe, effective alternatives include:

  • Honey (for children over one year) to soothe the throat.
  • Hydration with water, juice, or warm broth to thin mucus.
  • Cool-mist humidifiers to relieve dryness and congestion.
  • Saline drops for clearing nasal passages.
  • Warm liquids or steam to soothe the throat and loosen mucus

  • Shows breathing difficulty or blueish lips.
  • Produces wheezing or a “whooping” sound.
  • Has a high fever (102°F or higher).
  • Coughs persist for more than three weeks.

Caution: Without any medical advice, never give cough syrups for children. Over dose or even misuse of this medicine can be very harmful. It is always recommended to consult a doctor before taking any kind of medicine.
