Apple’s latest iPhone 17 rollout seemed to go off without a hitch. The brand highlighted multiple new features this year. One of these was an upgraded selfie camera and a new color option. The “Cosmic Orange” color pattern immediately resonated with fans. Customers went out of the way to find this color for absolutely every model.
Now, a serious issue is starting to rear its ugly head with that color. Users are voicing their concerns on social media. The once-vibrant Cosmic Orange color finish is fading. Many are stating these models are turning pink. In some cases, the models have become straight baby pinks, while others are just fading to a deeper pink shade. This seems to be a widespread issue that is escalating.
This is not a software problem, however. This situation is a physical material issue with the color. There is nothing a software update can do to resolve this peeling paint. This problem relates to the outside casing of the phone. This appears to be a major lapse in quality control on Apple’s part. The iPhone 17 Pro has a purchase price of approximately ₹1,35,000 in India, and customers expect quality for this premium price.
On top of that, users had reported other issues already. Many had noticed light scratches on the brand new phones very easily. Many labeled this situation “Scratch-Gate”. Customers are now calling this new color fading issue “Color-Gate”. This is not the first time Apple has faced a major product issue.
Back in 2014, Apple released the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, which had a bending issue. That issue quickly took on the name “Bendgate.” In 2018, iPhone XS customers experienced a “Beautygate” issue — the selfie camera was smoothing the skin too much. Apple solved that issue by making a software update. The color issue is also an issue, but it is different as it is much more concrete.
The issue seems to be limited to the Cosmic Orange color. Other colors such as Silver or Deep Blue remain unaffected. The finish on these iPhones looks good and is still stable with no fading. This all gives reason to assume the hazy orange iPhones are due to the orange paint process. No explanation has yet been publicly provided by Apple.
Technology industry insiders are curious to see what Apple will do in response to the complaints. Apple needs to act and respond to the customer complaints. They may offer customers a free replacement. They could also offer troubled customers the ability to get their phone repaired. Lastly, Apple may recall the Cosmic Orange model. For now, only customers that purchased the Cosmic Orange model are disappointed.
