China has solidified its role as a superpower in technology. It is now developing sophisticated AI models at a fraction of the cost. While American companies are spending billions of dollars in development, Chinese companies achieve similar results while spending millions. The development of this lower-cost innovation is now moving into the military space.
An AI model was developed by a Chinese startup called DeepSeek, and it shook things up. It is an artificial intelligence model developed with very little investment, and did not rely on chips from high-end companies like Nvidia. The mere release of its chatbot created significant buzz in the stock market. Nvidia dropped fourteen percent in value almost overnight.
China has now harnessed this AI for military might. The defense company Norinco introduced an autonomous military ground vehicle, which utilizes the DeepSeek artificial intelligence model. It can drive at speeds up to fifty kilometers an hour and is fully autonomous when it is providing operational support in a combat situation.
Beijing is actively developing autonomous weapons systems. The next generation of weapons can identify their own targets as well as make real-time decisions, independent of a human operator. Leaked documents and research papers substantiate this technology development. The systems include sophisticated drones and robotic dogs which incorporate artificial intelligence.
According to a Reuters report which evaluated hundreds of research papers, documented advancements in patents and official records, the evidence provides a clear indication that China’s military ambitions for AI development exist. The PLA (People’s Liberation Army) issued a tender to develop AI robot dogs capable of locating and and clearing explosives.
China’s military push is not contained to AI robots; it encompasses a broad range of emerging technologies, such as satellites, drone swarms, and ground robot swarms. The end goal is develop a modern military that is more advanced than their counterparts in the post-modern era. The current ramp-up of AI marks a considerable change in the modern warfighting construct in order to exhibit China’s commitment to winning decisively through technical superiority.
