Lokah Box Office Report: Lokah Chapter 1 – Chandra has become one of the biggest successes in the history of Malayalam cinema. The origin of a female superhero in the title character launched the career of the movie from where things are just starting to appear to move. Released on August 28 during the Onam season without any pre-release hype, the film’s word of mouth and glamour remakes propelled it to its eventual box office success.
What makes Lokah special is how much of the run was record breaking; the movie dominated Kerala’s theatres while breaking benchmarks for South Indian cinema, overall. No other female-driven South Indian movie had crossed the ₹100 crore mark prior. Lokah demolished that threshold while eventually securing over ₹300 crore worldwide as the single, highest grossing Malayalam film.
A prominent trade tracker site in India, Sacnilk, reports that Lokah has now accumulated ₹156.73 crores net in India (₹183.67 crores gross and overseas ₹119.9 crores), giving it a grand total of ₹303.57 crores worldwide, 63 days after its release. Even after 2 months, the movie is still screening in select theatres in Kerala and other locations.
The movie will be available to stream on Jio Hotstar on October 31st, 65 days after its initial release. With its superhero genre and pan-Indian audience, it should succeed during its OTT release as well.
The journey of the Lokah universe is only just beginning, as Dominic Arun has directed the next installment, titled Chathan, which will star Tovino Thomas, followed by new developments with Dulquer Salmaan and Mammootty. With its tremendous commercial performance and expanding universe, Loka is now firmly positioned as Malayalam Cinema’s first true superhero franchise.
