India to Launch Its Own Truecaller Like Caller ID System

India to Launch Its Own Truecaller Like Caller ID System

Truecaller Like Caller ID System:

The Indian telecom sector is set to undergo a major transformation with the introduction of the Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) system. Approved by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), this new feature will display the caller’s real name taken directly from telecom companies’ verified KYC (Know Your Customer) databases whenever a call is received.

Truecaller Like Caller ID System:

Currently, when you get a call from an unknown number, only the phone number appears on your screen. But once CNAP is implemented, the caller’s authentic name will also appear. This means users will know exactly who is calling, making it easier to identify genuine and spam calls.

Unlike apps such as Truecaller, which depend on crowd-sourced data that may be inaccurate, CNAP will rely on official telecom records, making it a more reliable and privacy-friendly system. The data will not be shared with any external apps, ensuring better security and user confidentiality.

CNAP is already in its pilot testing phase in Haryana with Vodafone-Idea, while Jio is expected to start trials soon. The government plans to roll out the service nationwide by March 31, 2026, and it will initially be available for 4G and 5G users. However, around 200 million 2G users might not have access immediately.

The new system will also benefit businesses. When a bank or a telecom company calls, their official names such as “XYZ Bank Official Call” or “ABC Pvt Ltd Marketing” will appear on the recipient’s screen. This helps people identify legitimate calls from fake or scam numbers.

The benefits of CNAP include fewer spam and fraud calls, improved security, and better user experience without depending on third-party apps. Since it works at the network level, it does not require mobile data or Wi-Fi, making it accessible to everyone.

With CNAP, India is taking a major step toward safer and smarter communication, helping citizens trust the calls they receive in an increasingly digital world.
