YouTube is currently implementing a novel AI system. This system is designed to extrapolate a user’s age automatically. However, the AI technology is malfunctioning. It is identifying many adults as children. As a result, these adult users are running into complications. They can no longer see their assigned video recommendations.
YouTube applies AI to check age online. The business began this program in various countries. An AI algorithm will detect if a user is under 18. The platform deploys digital well-being products and restricts age-restricted content for the accounts. The aim is to forward a safe space for minors.
The AI age verification system is not functioning properly. The platform is mistaking many adult users for children. These users are over the age of 18. They are mentioning their struggles on social media and YouTube. One 21-year-old adult user stated that YouTube’s AI did not recognize him as an adult. Another adult user experienced the same mistake; the platform did not see him as an adult user.
YouTube provides a warning message for the user stating the platform could not verify their age. YouTube then alters the settings under their account.
This restricts their access to various videos. The experience is frustrating for legitimate adult users. They lose control over their content preferences.
Users now have only one reliable option. They must verify their age manually. This process requires submitting identification proof. You can use a selfie, credit card, or official ID. Manual verification confirms you are an adult. It restores full access to YouTube’s content.
YouTube has not launched this AI system globally. It is active only in select countries right now. These include the United States and the United Kingdom. Some European nations also have the system. Google uses a similar tool on the Play Store for certain app downloads.
