iBomma Ravi Punishment: This was an event that more or less kicked off a huge upheaval in the Indian film industry, and of course it was the arrest of Immadi Ravi, head man of one of the large-scale piracy networks, iBomma. For years, he managed to run and hide behind the curtains, but at last, he has been caught up in illegal activities. And now, with new amendments in the law strengthening anti-piracy enforcement, the question that remains is: How severe will his punishment be?
In July 2025, the Cinematograph Act underwent some significant crucial amendments aimed at putting an end to film piracy. It has imposed some really stringent punishments for all persons who record, stream, or distribute films unauthorized. Since Ravi was uploading nearly all Telugu films and OTT content, the amended Law is predominantly applicable for him.
Termed as Decreeing Jail Term by the Cinematograph Act
Minimum 3 months and a maximum of three years sentencing in case of illegal recording and streaming.
What really made Ravi’s case serious was the fact that he was causing continuous, repeated piracy. The thousands of films illegally copied or transmitted by the court may classify his acts as aggravated, repeated offences, leading to even more severe punishment.
The new legislation further imposes very heavy monetary fines:
Minimum fine of INR 3 lakh extendable to 5% of a film’s production budget.
Since Ravi pirated almost every big release over the years, these fines could run into several crores if producers opt to file individual claims.
This section, besides the Cinematograph Act, also presents a six months to three years imprisonment as well as per offence invocation amounts up to Rupees 2 lakhs as additional penalties.
Once again, because Ravi pirated quite a number of titles, these penalties will add up significantly.
This could possibly have set a new precedent in crimes of that nature in history.
