Everyone needs to send emails regularly. Students and working professionals both use email. Sometimes we send emails to the wrong person by mistake. You might act in haste or carelessness. Do not panic if this happens to you. Gmail offers an “Undo Send” feature. This can cancel your email immediately. It prevents the receiver from getting your message.
This feature gives users a grace period of holding their email. It prevents the email from sending within a preset time that you choose. In that amount of time, you have a chance to cancel sending the email. During that time, you are in control of what happens to that email. You can prevent the email from reaching the recipient’s inbox. This function works on desktop and mobile versions of Gmail. The process is virtually the same regardless of the platform.
To get started, after you send your email as you usually do, you will see a notification box appear. The notification box will say “Message Sent” at the bottom left of your account. You will notice a button that states “Undo” right next to it. You will need to press this button very quickly. When you press this button, the email again will open in the compose window. From there, you can make changes or delete the original email all together. The process works just about the same for the gmail mobile app. After you’ve sent a confirmation appears at the bottom. Then just press the “Undo” text in the notification box.
You may have already known but Gmail allows you to extend the undo sent period. Go into your Gmail. Click on the gear icon. This will open up the Settings menu. Choose the option “See all settings”. Then select the tab “General.” Look for the section “Undo Send” on the list. You will see a cancellation time dropdown menu. You can increase the time from 5 seconds to 30 seconds. Choose the duration that suits you best. This gives you more time to recall emails.
This feature acts as a safety net. It protects you from embarrassing email mistakes. Always set the maximum cancellation time. This provides the longest possible recall window. It is a simple but very effective tool.
