Commissioner Re-Release: Malayalam cinema is all set to welcome yet another much-publicized re-release, and this time one of the biggest action thrillers of the 1990s. The 1994 blockbuster Commissioner, which saw Suresh Gopi’s meteoric rise to stardom, is making a re-release in theatres, this time in a newly minted 4K Atmos version. Written by Renji Panicker and directed by Shaji Kailas, it was a landmark in Malayalam mass-action cinema.
Renji Panicker’s smart dialogues and Suresh Gopi’s very hot performance made the film a mega-hit. This was the time when the theatres in Kerala were rocked by aplomb and were running to full capacity. The popularity of the film soon crossed the state border as it was dubbed into Tamil and Telugu and became a big hit down south.
The month of January will see the re-debut of the movie in theaters, reviving the nostalgic feeling of an entire generation who hailed Bharathchandran IPS as one of the most potent characters in Malayalam cinema.
The Telugu version managed a run of over 100 days in the region and definitely helped raise Suresh Gopi’s fan following in Tamil Nadu and Telangana/Andhra Pradesh. The Commissioner’s success created massive interest in dubbing rights for Suresh Gopi’s subsequent films. Produced by M. Mani under the banner of Sunitha Productions, the movie starred talented actors like Ratheesh, Shobana, Rajan P. Dev, Vijayaraghavan, Baiju Santhosh, and Ganesh Kumar.
The revival will also be included for the re-release film, recommissioning the epic background score of the Commission of the sequel Bharathchandran IPS. It was composed again by Benny Jones for the remastered edition.
Other significant people involved in the restoration of the film are music director Rajamani, cinematographer Dinesh Babu, editor L. Bhoominathan, and art director Boban. 4K remastering is managed by Shine V. A., Melli V. A., and Laison T. J., with Atmos mixing done by Hari Narayanan. The marketing is done by Hyseen Global Ventures, and the film’s PRO is Vazhur Jose.
A powerful shot of nostalgia to ardent followers of the original Malayalam action cinema would be available to the Commissioner after an awaited 31-year gap back in theaters.
