India Mandates This App in Every Smartphone, Impossible to Delete

The Indian government is introducing a new rule. All smartphones must have a security app. This app will be pre-installed permanently. Users cannot delete or disable it. The rule aims to improve public safety.

Government Directs Manufacturers

The Telecom Ministry issued a private directive. It instructed all smartphone companies. They must install the ‘Sanchar Sathi’ app. This applies to all devices sold in India. The order came on November 28.

Timeline to implement

Manufacturers will have a period of 90 days to comply with this requirement. New models of phones will have to come with the app pre-installed. Those phones currently being shipped in the supply chain will also need to have the app installed via an update from the respective manufacturers to enable customers to have access to the app.

Core function of the app

The core functions of the app allow users to report fraudulent communication via all forms of electronic communication, such as phone calls, text messages, or WhatsApp messages. Users can also use the app to effectively block phones that have been lost or stolen by entering an IMEI number into the app to block the device from being able to connect to the mobile network.

Tracking stolen devices

The app blocks a stolen mobile device from accessing the network. This feature has already helped recover many devices, according to information provided to the government.

SIM card checks

The app lets users verify every SIM card registered under their name. Users can also block any suspicious SIM card through the app. This action prevents identity theft and fraud.

Verify phones being used

The app assists users in determining whether or not their phone is authentic. If the phone is not authentic, the app assists users in determining whether or not their phone is counterfeit and allows buyers to avoid purchasing counterfeit phones.

Apple’s issue

Apple has a policy in place that prohibits manufacturers from installing third-party applications that are not offered by Apple pre-installed on the phone. Apple has not yet issued a public statement regarding this order.

Other Major Brands’ Stance

Google and Samsung also remain silent. Xiaomi has not issued any statement. Their official response is still pending.

The ‘Sanchar Sathi’ Platform

The Department of Telecommunications launched this platform. It happened last year in 2023. The app is already on app stores. You can download it on Android and iOS.
