Dulquer Salmaan: The latest reports about Deepika Padukone’s withdrawal from major Telugu films-Kalki 2 and Spirit-have stirred much noise about the working conditions in the Indian film industry. Newspapers have also speculated on disagreements between Padukone and the projects- concerning hours of work, particularly Padukone’s demands for an eight-hour workday- as reasons for her decision. As the conversation continues toward better working conditions in the industry, actor Dulquer Salmaan has now joined this conversation with input from The Hollywood Reporter India’s Producers Roundtable.
Dulquer explained: Each Industry Functions Differently, and Malayalam cinema by the way tends to shoot as fast as the shoot begins, usually not having a fixed time on when to end the day’s shootings.
Of course, the cast and crews go through intense, tiring schedules, which is hence why everyone lets out a sigh of relief and starts clapping when the announcement of pack-up is made, marking the end of another physically exhausting day at work.
Dulquer recalls that his first Telugu film brought him into a very different system where the pack should be up by 6 PM. Initially, this was refreshing but, for that fascinating one month long project, it took nine months to complete.
Similarly, Dulquer realized that in the Tamil film industry, the second Sunday of the month is compulsory for holidaying, an idea absent in Malayalam productions.
But the realities of filmmaking- to date, super-tight schedules to accommodate all the dates of actors and the urgency of completing some scenes- did not allow him to implement several structural changes; in fact, he had the opposite effect.
The Telugu actor, Rana Daggubati, joined the debate by stating that cinema is not comparable to conventional environments of work. To him, it is not work but life, adding that the people involved in it must adapt to its unique requirements.
