Emergency Review: 2.5/5

Emergency is a political drama based on the life of Indira Gandhi. It features the ‘Emergency’ moment, the major aspect of India’s first Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s life. It features Kangana Ranaut, Anupam Kher, and Shreyas Talpade in the lead roles. Kangana Ranaut also directed and co-produced the movie.

Story:

The first part of the political thriller follows the circumstances that resulted in India’s Emergency being imposed in 1975. The film’s handling feels like a political science class, especially with a supporting ensemble that includes the late Satish Kaushik, Shreyas Talpade, and Anupam Kher.

And it might just make you grab out for your smartphone- not to research, but to check messages and your social media. All of this obviously doesn’t help, as viewers’ attention spans have been decreasing over time. Though the goal is correct, Indira’s hamartia is that she believes no one can meddle with her. However, the movie doesn’t value nuance; for instance, horrifying mirror reflections weren’t necessary to convey Indira’s regret for enforcing the Emergency. Kangana’s expression was enough. Similarly, focusing the camera on the picture of a lioness and then on Kangana’s face- we get the point!

By the time Indira announces the emergency, you are on the verge of giving up, and the intermission begins. As you get back into your seats, however, things start to shift, and Kangana eventually assumes leadership. Emergency is saved by a few emotionally charged and power-packed moments in the second half. Since Kangana is a talented performer, you are ready to overlook her artificial nose. Be on the lookout for her, especially when she has a significant personal loss.

The movie’s soundtrack—did we really need all these well-known characters to start singing? There is a disconnect between two of these lip-sync sequences. However, Ae Meri Jaan, which features Hariharan, is calming to listen to and is appropriately positioned.

Positives:

Kangana Ranaut’s performance

Anupam Kher’s performance

Based on true incidents

Negatives:

Controversial

Emergency: 2.5/5
